 The (Short) Story

It all started when I was about four old. I began telling stories to anyone who would listen. When patient enough to actually listen, most adults were amused. Albeit, a time or two, Little Lori actually got a verbal scolding for telling lies—adults can really suck at times!

I grew up in a rural farming community in Central Washington State amid acres of apple and pear orchards. The youngest of five, I escaped sibling chaos by reading and making up tall tales while dreaming of being an actual writer. At the age of eleven, I wrote my first documented poem inspired by Billy Joel’s song “My Life”. As an adolescent, poetry became a way to deal with emotions and understand what was happening in my life.

Despite my love of storytelling, believing naysayers, I didn’t enroll in college to study fine arts. Instead, I majored in Education. I continued to write steadily until mid-way through college when I focused on academics and slowly lost a part of myself essential to my happiness. I received my Bachelor of Arts in Secondary Education from Eastern Washington University, where I majored in English and minored in Health. Throughout my educational career, I’ve taught children, adolescents, and adults.

After graduation, I moved to Los Angeles County. I taught for several years until I transitioned to another career as an actress (and, yeah, a waitress). Years later, I used my teaching skills and health knowledge to build a successful career as a Private Pilates instructor in Southern California. I worked as a fitness professional for over a decade.

Because of an unexpected health emergency, I returned to my educational roots and taught English in the classroom for a few years. My favorite “thing” to teach is the writing process, especially storytelling. I am also a bit of a geek when it comes to grammar–I love exploring ways to use words and punctuation! Currently, I’m a full-time graduate student and studying Public Interest Communication at the University of Florida. (link?)

I am a woman over 50. The lyrics, “I get knocked down, but I get up again.”, depict a theme in my life.

The Emotional Abyss

A non-fiction creative mix of autobiography, poetry, and self-help.

The Emotional Abyss book contains personal stories, written when I was between the ages of 11 and 18.

The style is a creative non-fiction mix of stories told in the form of poetry, lyrics, and journal entries.

One of the reasons that I wrote the book was to show readers how writing can be a safe place to reflect on common, confusing & emotionally charged events—like heartbreak & loss.

Growing up, I felt like I had two personalities: Miss Insecurity & Miss Confident. And who showed up depended on my social & home environment. It was a constant struggle. I never knew where I belonged... Always trying to figure out who I was by asking myself, "Who am I, really?" Miss Insecurity or Miss Confident?

Writing was my saving grace. My aim is to share that with readers.

The Emotional Abyss is not the typical poetry, autobiography, nor compilation. Instead, it serves as a living time capsule—an unique glimpse into the psyche of a popular, creative, incredibly insecure, self-loathing teenage girl—as she fumbles through life and matures into a young woman.

On the surface, The Emotional Abyss is full of indulgent teenage ramblings, and once you dive in, insight and hope emerge.

Genre: Crime Drama, Thriller

Is revenge ever satisfying?

Summary

Is revenge ever satisfying? Three childhood friends attempt the ultimate social experiment.

Abused children, now twenty-somethings Jolt, Shasta, and Crush reunite in their hometown, united by camaraderie, seeking revenge.

Nine years later, categorizing them as f****ed-up understates who they’ve become.

Outcasts of society. Shunned by institutions. Forgotten in trust.

A chain-smoking coke-addict computer hacker—meet Jolt.

A virtuous alcoholic ex-stripper—meet Shasta.

An untamed drug-loving shark—meet Crush.

This drama could easily resemble a true-crime story seen on “Dateline”—it is at times violent, funny, heartbreaking, and all too common.

What happens when survival mode takes over conscience? The plot explores what’s right when you’ve been horrifically wronged.

Do secrets destroy love?

Summary

Do secrets destroy love? Former high school sweethearts fortuitously test the power of forgiveness, challenging what it means to love unconditionally.

Meet Daniel Donavan: When Daniel Donavan returns home after his father’s sudden death, the never married, professional mega-star football quarterback has one play on his mind: find out why his long-time high school girlfriend ghosted him after graduation as he considers retiring after another horrible football season.

Meet Elsa Murphy: when her high school sweetheart decides to stay their her hometown after returning for his father’s funeral, the divorced, anxious psychologist, has one objective: stay away from Daniel.

Raised as devout Catholics to be against abortion, the middle-aged former high school sweethearts, now strangers, stand in opposition on a women’s right to choose.

Although set in the 1980s, this romantic drama could easily resemble a current public interest story debunking fairytale romances—what happens to two people falling in love again with closed-chested secrets and deep-seated beliefs.

At times chilling, nostalgic, heartbreaking, and equally heartwarming, Playing Fields, plot explores a woman’s reproductive right to choose when to become a mother while religious groups in America focus on controlling women’s bodies.
